ISO 56001 is an international standard that provides a structured framework for managing innovation. It helps organizations manage innovation effectively by emphasizing adaptability, managing uncertainty, and exploiting insights, creating value, providing strategic direction, fostering an innovative culture, applying a systems approach, and promoting continual improvement.
The standard describes innovation management as a set of connected activities, from identifying opportunities and developing ideas to validating and deploying solutions. These activities help organizations plan, manage, and control innovation initiatives. The IMS is based on the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle, which supports continual improvement of innovation performance.

This framework is applicable to any organization, regardless of its type or size, the products and services it provides, or the types of innovations and innovation approaches it uses.

Organizations face constant pressure to respond to technological advancements, changing customer expectations, and increasing global competition. Innovation has therefore become essential for organizations seeking to remain relevant and competitive.
However, many organizations struggle to manage innovation effectively, as innovation activities are often informal, fragmented, or disconnected from the organization’s strategic objectives. This is why ISO 56001 is important. It supports organizations in consistently, strategically, and systematically managing innovation, helping integrate it into overall management practices. By establishing a structured approach to innovation management, organizations can better adapt to change, make more effective use of ideas and resources, and strengthen their ability to remain competitive in dynamic and evolving markets.
Uncertainty and unexpected disruptions are a constant reality in the business environment, and innovation enables organizations to respond effectively to change, remain competitive, and achieve long-term development, making it critical to business success because it enables continuous adaptation, value creation, and sustained growth.
